Honest about what a photo can’t tell

Discogs can list a dozen versions of the same record with the same sleeve and the same catalogue number. Sometimes the only difference is a letter in the dead wax, and sometimes nothing on your copy separates them at all. WAXid doesn’t paper over that. It tells you how sure it is, shows you what else it could be, and asks the question that would decide it. The condition grade is an estimate from your photos, not a substitute for grading the record in hand.

The one that isn’t the one

Same sleeve, same catalogue number, four decades between them. Here is the runout that tells them apart.

Words — the pressing desk

The 1979 first press carries a stamped A//1 with the plant code bitten deep into the dead wax; the 2015 repress is laser-etched, thin and even, and sits a full millimetre closer to the label.

Sellers rarely lie about this. They simply photograph the sleeve and never the runout

So the listing is honest and the assumption is not — which is the whole problem in one sentence, and the reason a photograph of the label is worth more than a paragraph of description.
